Expanding to 11 members, the BRICS Group is sending a message to international organisations

According to Chinese President Xi, this expansion marks a new beginning for BRICS cooperation and gives its operating principles a boost.

The leaders of the BRICS countries Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa have taken a significant step by deciding to add six new members to their alliance. Beginning on January 1, 2024, Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Argentina will join the BRICS alliance. According to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this expansion shows how important it is for international organizations to change with the times.
The declaration was made at a joint press conference that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa hosted in Johannesburg. He agreed on this first stage of expansion along with world leaders like Prime Minister Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. They emphasized the value of international cooperation and gave the BRICS partnership model more development authority from the foreign ministers.
After deciding on clear guidelines, standards, and procedures for the expansion, it was decided to accept new members. A total of 23 nations have formally applied to join the BRICS alliance, demonstrating its popularity and power.
In a tweet supporting the expansion, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that it will make BRICS more powerful and effective. He thinks it sends a message to all institutions around the world to adapt to changing conditions. India has always supported BRICS expansion because it strengthens the group and promotes a multipolar world order, Modi continued.
Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa were the founding members of BRICS in 2006; South Africa joined the group in 2010. The group currently accounts for a sizeable portion of the global population, GDP, and trade.

According to Ramaphosa, the BRICS are starting a new chapter to create a just, prosperous, inclusive, and fair society. The leaders also reaffirmed their dedication to dialogue-based, peaceful conflict resolution. They seek to use the BRICS economic alliance for the benefit of their local communities and to address issues that the global south faces in common. In the history of the BRICS and international cooperation, this expansion represents a significant turning point.
