The murder came to light when an 18-year-old youth came to visit him at the hospital and suddenly started firing bullets at him. Police officers present at Ward No. 24 at the time of the incident reported that they received a PCR call at around 4:20 PM, informing them that a patient had been shot dead and the assailant had fled. Upon reaching the scene, the police team recovered five empty bullet shells, three of which had hit Riazuddin.
After the incident, Riazuddin’s wife claimed that her husband was a victim of mistaken identity. The police have started a thorough investigation into the case and are trying to identify the suspect by examining CCTV footage. Additional DCP Vishnu Sharma of Shahdara said that their team reached the spot and confirmed that the deceased was Riazuddin. They are trying to determine if there was any enmity or motive behind the attack. This shooting incident has also created a sense of fear and insecurity among the resident doctors at the hospital. The Resident Doctors’ Association of the University College of Medical Sciences and Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital expressed deep sorrow over the incident. They announced a strike from July 15, stating that it would continue until security measures are enhanced. During this time, only emergency services will remain operational.
