Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha has been suspended from the Rajya Sabha following allegations of “gross violation of rules” and breach of privilege. The suspension comes in response to complaints from four fellow MPs, Sasmit Patra, S Phangnon Konyak, M Thambidurai, and Narahari Amin, who accused Raghav Chadha of including their names in a House panel resolution without their consent, a move Parliament considered against. established rules.

The decision to suspend Chadha was supported by a motion moved by Leader of the House Piyush Goyal in the Upper House. Goyal termed Chadha’s actions as “unethical conduct” and gross disregard of rules. The suspension will remain in effect until the Committee of Privileges completes its investigation into the alleged breach of privileges.

In his defence, Raghav Chadha argued that he had done nothing wrong and that his proposal to set up a select committee to consider the ‘Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023’ was in accordance with Rajya Sabha procedures . He asserted that no written consent or signature is required to nominate MPs to such committees, and hence, the allegations of forgery are baseless.

Piyush Goyal highlighted Singh’s disobedience and disruptive behavior in the chamber as reasons for the extension. Chadha, however, saw the suspension as a targeted move by the ruling party, claiming that he was being singled out for challenging prominent leaders despite his young age. He denied the allegations of forgery and questioned the credibility of the allegations against him.

The ‘Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023’, which Chadha had proposed to be discussed in detail within the Select Committee, has already been approved by Parliament. Waving a copy of the Rajya Sabha rules, Chadha emphasized that no signature or written consent is required to propose names to the committee.

The incident has sparked a debate in political circles about the interpretation of parliamentary ethics, procedures and rules. As Chadha’s suspension continues, it remains to be seen what the Committee of Privileges will decide on the matter and whether any further developments will emerge from the incident.
